The latest Gotham Knights trailer dives into how WB Games Montreal deals with that in the upcoming game. After all, not only does the developer need to manage these tricky elements, but also work in the fact that the one thing that brings them together—Batman—is gone.

This behind-the-scenes trailer features multiple interviews about how the team approached these characters and translated these characters into Gotham Knights’ combat and into a unique story about a “found family” beginning as no cohesive group. Furthermore, because players will spend time with these characters with their masks on, the team had to weave narrative elements together to depict each character as an individual outside the mark, resulting in a lot of “attitudes” and conflicts that push their interpersonal relationships with the other characters. These characters have largely worked alone and independently, and coming together is not an easy task. All in all, for fans of Gotham Knights or these DC heroes in general, the new trailer offers some great insight into this adaptation process.
Each Gotham Knights character does have a personal story that develops throughout the game, with this trauma, grief, and loss all playing a role in that narrative. Character design and combat-wise, each character is designed around certain shape languages: Red Hood is blocky, tank-like, and square; Batgirl is symmetrical and balanced; Robin is light and stealthy; and Nightwing is agile, angular, and sharp.
Indeed, it would seem that Gotham Knights has and continues to largely focus on its heroic cast of playable characters. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. With this, their combat abilities having been shown off, and their relationships continuing to develop, it stands to reason fans of these characters will largely find them recognizable come release. That said, there’s definitely room to showcase more of the villains coming to Gotham Knights. So far, fans have seen The Court of Owls and their Talons, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and Harley Quinn, but as each night sees these villains’ stories develop, one can’t help but wonder who else players will encounter.
Gotham Knights is set to release on October 21, 2022, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
