Because fans will be able to play as any dynamic duo they want at any point in Gotham Knights’ eccentric co-op design, these relationships will seemingly be handled with as little rivalry or contention as possible to have it make sense narratively. But that may not have been the case in these characters’ pasts. On the second issue’s cover of Gotham Knights’ prequel comic, Batman: Gotham Knights — Gilded City, Batman and Nightwing are seen tussling.

It is currently unknown why Batman and Nightwing are seemingly engaged in a legitimate fight in Gotham Knights’ prequel comic, but it makes some interesting implications as to the relationship they had before Bruce Wayne’s death. Based on what fans have heard and seen about each playable protagonist’s relationship with Bruce, there was no hint of any animosity lingering between them and their guardian or mentor figure. Dick is seen talking about being unsure of how to live up to Batman’s reputation in Gotham, but not about any discontent or hatred he harbored toward Bruce.

If there was indeed an incident or conversation shared between them that stirred dissent between them, it must have been fairly significant to result in a physical altercation in costume. Interestingly, Gotham Knights’ Nightwing is portrayed on the prequel comic’s cover as the one offensively slashing at Batman in an alleyway with his escrima sticks. This suggests that Nightwing had enough of a reason to attack Batman himself.

Batman: Gotham Knights — Gilded City may not be essential reading for fans to comprehend the events of Gotham Knights, but it will be invaluable to fans who wish to have a little more insight on its characters and what their relationships with Batman were like leading up to his supposed death. With the reveal of the second issue’s cover, fans will also learn why Nightwing and Batman had some sort of fallout in the form of a physical fight.

Each issue of Gotham Knights’ prequel comic will have an associable in-game reward players can earn through a code featured within the physical book. It was originally intended that the prequel comic’s first issue would release on the same day as Gotham Knights did, and it is unknown if the prequel comic’s release has now shifted to the preceding Friday as the game recently has.

Gotham Knights is set to release on October 21 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
