Gotham Knights wasn’t the only new show to have been green-lit for a pilot episode, and the Supernatural spinoff, The Winchesters, as well as Walker spinoff, Walker: Independence, were also granted pilots this year. The shows are still in the very early stages of development, but the CW has announced plenty of new information about the new DC series over the last few weeks. Here’s everything they’ve said about Gotham Knights, so far.

The Story

The plot of Gotham Knights will detail the events that follow the death of Bruce Wayne, as a group of rag-tag individuals are wrongfully framed for the murder of Batman. In a turn of events, Wayne’s adopted son works with those accused of killing his father, hoping to aid them in clearing their names. The absence of Batman in the city of Gotham inspires villains everywhere to start causing trouble, so the accused killers do everything they can to take Batman’s place and keep their city safe.

The series will be based on comic books written and created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. There’s currently a video game in development of the same name, and although the show and the game share some plot similarities, there doesn’t seem to be any real connection between the two.

The Cast

The CW has recently announced the stars of the Gotham Knights pilot episode, including Navia Robinson, Olivia Rose Keegan, Oscar Morgan, Fallon Smythe and Tyler Dichiara.

Navia Robinson is best known for her role in the Disney Plus series, Raven’s Home, where she played the part of Raven’s daughter. Robinson will become Carrie Kelley in Gotham Knights, the brave young woman who convinced Batman to let her be his sidekick.

Days of Our Lives actress, Olivia Rose Keegan, will become the wild and unpredictable Duela, who was born to well-known criminals in Arkham Asylum. Duela taught herself how to fight and survive after being abandoned by her parents, but despite her rough edges, she’s capable of true greatness.

Oscar Morgan has participated in a number of TV series, including Warren and Millie Inbetween. He’ll be taking the spotlight as Turney Hayes in Gotham Knights, better known as Bruce Wayne’s adopted son.

Fallon Smythe and Tyler DiChiara will star as Harper Row and Cullen Row, respectively. The sibling duo are both members of the LGBTQ+ community, who are struggling to cope with the trauma inflicted upon them by an abusive childhood. Harper is a genius, bisexual engineer who goes by the name Bluebird, and her brother Cullen is a transgender teen that’s learning how to stand up for himself, after years of being beaten down.

Smythe is known for her roles in the Disney series titled I Didn’t Do It, as well as the Grown-ish series made by Freeform. DiChiara has starred in the movies Relish and The Virgin of Highland Park.

The Crew

Gotham Knights will be written by Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams. Fiveash and Stoteraux have worked in the world of DC heroism before, serving as executive producers for the CW Batwoman series. They have also worked together on other popular shows like The Vampire Diaries and Gotham. Not only will Fiveash and Stoteraux be show writers for Gotham Knights, they’ll be taking on the role of executive producers, next to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden.

Abrams has worked beside Fiveash and Stoteraux before, as the executive story editor and one of the writers for Batwoman. In addition to being a Gotham Knights writer, she’ll also be the show’s co-executive producer. Danny Cannon is set to direct the pilot episode.

Release Date

Since Gotham Knights is still early on in the developing process, the CW has yet to announce an official release date for the pilot episode. If the project is turned into a full-blown series, it’s safe to assume the show will premiere sometime in the fall, hitting small screens when the other CWverse shows like The Flash, or Superman & Lois return.

The CW typically airs new seasons of CWverse shows starting in the month of October, so Gotham Knights should be no different. At the earliest (assuming the pilot is granted a series order), Gotham Knights could be released in October 2022, though a 2023 release seems more likely.

Director Danny Cannon announced on social media that the pilot episode will begin filming in April of this year.
