Developed by Polyphony Digital and released on PS4 and PS5 in March 2022, Gran Turismo 7 has already received multiple updates. A free Gran Turismo 7 update dropped in December, which featured five new cars and a new location for Scapes. The content drip feed looks like it may continue for some time as Sony continues to support one of its most high-profile properties.

When the PlayStation VR2 arrives on February 22, Gran Turismo 7 will serve as a launch-day title. Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan announced the news while speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where he also mentioned the remarkable sales milestone Gran Turismo has reached as a franchise and promised PS VR2 players will be able to experience the game “like never before.”
Sony has made some of its racing titles available on VR hardware in the past, but with only limited success. Unfortunately, Driveclub VR servers shut down in 2020, marking the end of one of Sony’s most ambitious racing experiments at that point. The original PS VR hardware also offered limited support for Gran Turismo Sport, a precursor to Gran Turismo 7 that released in 2017. It is unclear at this time whether the PS VR2 version of Gran Turismo 7 will offer a full range of features, or if it will prove more selective.
The PS VR2 is more expensive than a PS5, so it will need an extensive lineup of intriguing software to convince early adopters the sticker price matches the value. Sony has revealed a variety of games designed to appeal to fans old and new, including editions of recent successes such as Among Us and No Man’s Sky, original content from major IP such as Horizon Call of the Mountain, and updates to classic titles such as the upcoming Fantavision 202X. Offering players a new way to experience other games they already love is another terrific way to demonstrate the value the PS VR2 brings to the living room, and Gran Turismo 7 is a natural way to do it while reminding gamers why they bought the PS5 console in the first place. Hopefully, similar updates for other such games will follow in the months to come.
Gran Turismo 7 is available now on PS4 and PS5.
