However, Gran Turismo 7’s launch was far from perfect, as users couldn’t play the game for hours due to server maintenance. Players need to be connected online to play GT7’s singleplayer campaign, and developer Polyphony Digital had extended the maintenance period due to an issue found with update 1.07. Gran Turismo 7 is also receiving criticism for its microtransactions, and the credits earned for winning races got reduced in a recent patch, which further angered the player base. Now, players are showing their frustrations by posting negative reviews for the game.

Gran Turismo 7 has a user score of 2.4 on Metacritic, a massive difference from its critic score of 87. Most users state that they like the gameplay of Gran Turismo 7 but are posting negative reviews due to the always-online campaign and the microtransactions. In addition, GT7’s cars are more expensive than they are in its predecessor, as it can take $30+ to purchase a car that costs $3 in GT Sport.

Sony’s PS5 games cost $70 compared to $60 charged by most other publishers, and many users raised concerns over this increase when the console launched. However, PlayStation titles continue to sell well, and games like Horizon Forbidden West and last year’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart did not contain microtransactions. Still, a new report from the VSC Rating Board suggests that Horizon Forbidden West will get an online store for DLC expansions, and the game’s ESRB rating also mentions in-game purchases. As such, it does seem like Sony is finally looking to add microtransactions to its singleplayer catalog.

Hitman 3, Dying Light 2, Lost Ark, and Elden Ring also got review bombed this year, but the extent varies between titles. Gran Turismo 7’s user score is lower than all of these games, and it’s incredibly disappointing because gamers seem to like the core gameplay. Polyphony Digital will have to address these concerns in an update, but perhaps it’s too late to make the campaign playable offline. However, players may be satisfied if the developer changes the rate of earning credits and the amount required to purchase desirable cars - though it remains to be seen if either adjustment will actually end up being made by Polyphony.

Gran Turismo 7 is available now on PS4 and PS5.
