The TikTok account hiddengamingdetails recently pointed out a little-known trick that Grand Theft Auto 4 players can do to get some extra help in the game. In Grand Theft Auto 4, players can give money to homeless people, which will gain them as an ally. In the clip, Grand Theft Auto 4 protagonist Niko Bellic drops money on the ground, which is grabbed by the homeless person. Niko then punches a taxi that’s driving by, prompting the driver to get out of the vehicle and start a fight.

As soon as the disgruntled taxi driver punches the Grand Theft Auto 4 player, the homeless person they gave money to springs to action, putting up their fists and defending Niko. This trick doesn’t secure homeless people as permanent companions or anything like that, but it’s still an interesting trick and something that many players apparently didn’t know about if the reaction to the TikTok video is any indication.
This feature didn’t return in Grand Theft Auto 5, and it may be due to the fact that it’s extremely limited in its usefulness. The homeless people that Grand Theft Auto 4 players pay won’t get into fights that involve weapons, and they won’t follow Niko around. This means that the only time this really matters is if players happened to get into a fight immediately after giving money to a homeless person. It probably won’t happen unless Grand Theft Auto 4 players are doing it on purpose just to see the homeless person help them in a fist fight.
It will be interesting to see if Grand Theft Auto 6 brings this feature back or leaves it stranded in GTA 4. As it stands, Rockstar Games has revealed nothing about Grand Theft Auto 6 and hasn’t even confirmed its existence yet. Fans are holding out hope for a GTA 6 reveal sometime within the next year or so, but they shouldn’t hold their breath.
The next GTA release is the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, currently scheduled to launch at an undetermined point in March.
Grand Theft Auto 4 is available now for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
