Grand Theft Auto 5 is known for its memorable prologue mission that takes place in Ludendorff, North Yankton. It’s here that Michael, Trevor, and their partner Brad take part in a robbery attempt that goes wrong. The job devolves into a shoot-out and car chase, and when it’s all said and done, the story jumps ahead to present-day. Fans have picked apart the North Yankton section of the game in search of Easter eggs and clues, finding an alien frozen beneath the river in the process. However, the last detail pointed out about the prologue isn’t an Easter egg, but rather just a depressing fact about the game.

The GTA 5 prologue mission takes place nine years before the main game. As pointed out by Reddit user donqon, that’s equivalent to how old the Grand Theft Auto 5 game is today. GTA 5 first released on September 17, 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, and so it recently turned nine years old itself. Besides serving as a grim reminder of the passing of time, it also puts into perspective just how long fans have been waiting to play Grand Theft Auto 6.
Unfortunately for GTA fans who are anxious to finally play Grand Theft Auto 6, they likely have to wait a few more years yet. A reputable insider has said that the Grand Theft Auto 6 release window is 2024 or 2025, meaning fans have to wait at least two to three more years to play the game. This is unsurprising, considering the project was just finally confirmed to be in development earlier this year, but it may still be disappointing for those that have waited such a long time for a new GTA experience.
Fans of Rockstar Games’ work may be disappointed in the general lack of new game releases from the studio since GTA 5’s 2013 launch. There was a time when Rockstar released brand-new games on a regular basis, but as game development has become more demanding and Rockstar’s standards have increased, its output has been significantly slower. The only full-scale, brand-new release from Rockstar in the time between Grand Theft Auto 5 launched and now was 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.
There was a chance that the massive Grand Theft Auto 6 hack could have thrown a wrench in Rockstar’s development plans, but the company has said that the leak won’t impact the game’s development. Assuming everything goes smoothly, Grand Theft Auto players should get to play the game within the next few years or so.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is in development.
